With a rather naive heroine who acts most stupidly and police who allow suspects to get a significant proof all by themselves and then do not worry when the suspects do not turn up, and the mystery is solved by a confessional letter…. Little, however, is made of the locked-room aspect of the murder in the novel which is more about the tangled relationships among the various characters. But if she didn’t do it ,who did and how did that person escape? She finds that somebody has opened her door and as she rushes to the study which is now only accessible from her room as its other door is locked from the inside, she finds Robert dying. Elizabeth decides to run away when she hears shots from Roberts’ study. And Robert really gets very ugly: backhanding his butler who suffers a concussion, slapping Elizabeth and locking her inside her room. Even she is horrified, however, at how ugly Robert can be when drunk. It is soon clear that Ruth is very much in love with Robert and hates Elizabeth with a passion. ![]() When the Daikins return from the dinner at Cyril’s, they find Dyke and Ruth, an employee of Robert’s waiting for them. Dyke replies that he would soon be there. ![]() When the novel opens, the couple is in Jamaica and Elizabeth has written a letter to Dyke asking him for help. Soon, however, she realises her mistake because Robert turns out to be a violent alcoholic. She breaks up with him and on the rebound marries Robert Daikin, Dyke’s millionaire uncle. She suspects that Dyke Sanderson, a young, handsome man she is love with is actually after her money. Today’s book is one such.Įlizabeth Daikin, an heiress, finds herself at a loss after the death of her widower father.
